France 2004

One of the perks of my itinerant life is Frequent Flyer Miles, which I used to travel to Paris and the French Riviera in the Summer of 2004.  My daughter Rainbow-Shalom and I went together (she had saved several generous college-graduation gifts for a European trip) and we had a blast being together in Paris and Nice.

Rainbow-Shalom maps out the day's activities in our hostel room in Paris.  (Yes, that's "hostel", not "hotel", and it's a great way to save money and make friends for those who don't need the four-star treatment!)

No Bodyguards for Rainbow-Shalom After All

We were able to save a lot of money by not having to hire bodyguards to protect Rainbow-Shalom from the famous wolves of Paris, because the presence of numerous tall, broad-shouldered gendarmes was protection enough.  Those crisp epaulets, ooh, la, la!

However, I regret to report that a number of men turned their heads so quickly when they saw Rainbow-Shalom that they will henceforth need a series of chiropractic adjustments.  Say a little prayer for them.

Le Eiffel Tower Here's yours truly under a world-famous landmark.  Yes, there are many smaller imitations and replicas, but this is the original.  That's Paris for you: a city of originals, like the Mona Lisa I got to see in the Louvre.

Unfortunately, Mona wasn't allowed to come home with me.  Some nonsense about red tape and 5 million euros.

Let's Just Stop a Minute and Think About This

Sometimes you just have to stop what you're doing and ask yourself what is the best thing to do.  When I heard about this famous Thinker of Paris, I thought, "I'll just go see him and rest my feet while he enlightens me with his wisdom."

Rodin's sculpture "The Thinker" So I went to this great thinker, but I must have stumped him with my question.  All I asked is if he could tell me the nature of reality.  I waited for over TWO hours, but he never said a word!  If you ask me, he needs to think a little faster!  HAH!  (My feet did feel better, though.)

On to Nice on the Riviera

Then it was on to a luxury condominium in Nice, France, overlooking the harbor with its boat traffic from Nice to Corsica.  Corsica is a large French island far out in the Mediterranean, and Nice is the closest major port on the French mainland to Corsica, so its port is quite busy.  There's always something to see.
