The Greek Island of Crete, Spring 2003

My pilgrimage to Crete was one of the most profound experiences of my life, totally safe without a hair of disharmony!  The people were so beautiful and loving, my eyes fill with tears as I think about it!

Now, here is a profound insight I had about travel to other countries.  I always like to learn the key phrases of the language wherever I travel, like “Thank you very much,” or “I love you.”  However, this time I was moved to learn how to say a couple of other types of phrases:

  1. “Dox a si o Theos!” (giving thanks to God!)
  2. "Irini gia ton Kosmo!” (peace for the world!)

Since 98% of the population is Greek Orthodox, I felt safe in using these expressions.  Anyhow, the reaction to these two phrases was totally overwhelming.

Palace of Knossos

Here are but a few reactions, because EVERY PERSON was blown away.  In our 6-star resort on the Mediterranean (I didn't even know there were such places), I expressed the above two phrases to the maid who was cleaning our room (twice a day, mind you) and she threw her arms around my neck and kissed me over and over.  Whenever I saw her, she continued to do this.  She even followed me out to the car when we were leaving and kept kissing me and telling me in Greek to have a safe trip.

Our bus driver could not speak English, but when I told him “Peace for the world" (in Greek),  he turned around and said in a lovely thick Greek accent, “I luff you!”  Another man in the market responded after I said “Giving thanks to God”: “It is so wonderful to feel this way.  It is good to say this, but it is even better to hear it!”

I could go on and on.  I am deeply in love with Crete forever.

The cave where Zeus was born totally captured me and I could have meditated there for a week!  The Palace of Knossos threw me into another realm.  In fact, I kept asking, “Have I been here before?”  You see, every time I start doodling, I have been drawing the twin axes all my life!  And they were found on the many archeological finds in Knossos.  Just as an addendum, they invented indoor plumbing 2000 BC!  Are we slow learners or what?

The Porto Elounda Resort

At the ultra-luxurious Porto Elounda Resort, the lower floor of our two-story suites opened onto a 6-foot-deep rooftop swimming pool overlooking the blue, blue Mediterranean Sea.  We experienced the lifestyle of the rich and famous!
